Maughold Nordic Rune and Ogham Stone (1000 CE)

Background

(March 13, 2026) Macalister reports that this stone was described in P. M. C. Kermode's book on the Manx Crosses (London , 1907). This stone dates to about the time when the last of the Viking ruled kingdoms were defeated in Ireland. The Vikings arrived in Ireland in 795 CE, initiating over two centuries of raids and settlement by Norwegian and Danish forces. They founded Ireland's first major coastal towns, including Dublin, Waterford, Cork, and Limerick, before being largely defeated at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014

The ogham is a simple letter list showing the lines in order serving as a memory aid for other writing which did not survive.

The stone is a slab of slate measuring about 1' 0."

It ends with a plea to activate the life-power deities and energize astrology-magic to bring fertility to the land.
